The pollution situation is getting worse by the day owing to
the rise in emissions from automobiles. According to WHO, 4.6 million people lose their lives each year to air pollution-related diseases which is pretty
alarming.
While we have little control over what’s happening outside,
we can definitely take steps to improve the situation inside our homes. How about having your own oxygen factory at
home? Here is a list of indoor plants that will not only purify the air but
also make your space aesthetically good:
1. Snake plant, also known as Mother-in-law’s Tongue has thick
leathery leaves that stand two to four feet tall. Fun fact: Imagine yourself
living in an air-sealed room and there is no airflow. Fret not. You would need
only 6 plants per person for your survival.
It removes formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, and nitrogen oxides and
produce a large amount of Oxygen.
2. Peace Lilly is the showstopper among other indoor plants.
With beautiful white blooms and dark foliage, this one is on the NASA’a top ten Household cleaning plants. It grows well in warm humid climates. If you place it in indirect dim
light, it will do just fine. This
tropical plant breaks down and neutralizes toxic gases like benzene,
formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide.
3. Areca Palm: Air
purifier, humidifier, decorative piece- this one is an all-rounder. If you’re a fan of
tropical vibes like me then you should definitely add Areca Palm to your
indoors. It demands more attention than other indoor plants but the gorgeous
long fronds will make it a statement piece, worth adding to your living space.
Keep it in a large self-draining pot as
excess water can kill it. Not only it removes toxins but also emits a lot of moisture
which is a boon for places with dry air.
4. Devil’s Ivy is most commonly referred to as a Money plant. This
plant is called Devil’s ivy as it is impossible to kill it. It will thrive in
both bright sunlight as well as dim light. Place it in the Southeast direction of the living room for prosperity and good
energy. Toxins removed: xylene, benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene.
5. Spider Plants also go by the name Airplane plant or ribbon
plant. They need a little more room because of the arching displays and especially
beautiful when the long thin green white foliage drop from the hanging baskets.
Definitely, a no-hassle plant to have if
you’re a beginner. It is best known to decrease carbon monoxide and nitrogen
dioxide levels.
